Fulfilling Distribution Requirements
In order to graduate, you must fulfill distribution requirements in three broad subject areas that are described in the General Announcements. Not every course in the university will satisfy distribution requirements. The academic departments send lists of the courses they judge suitable for distribution to the Committee on the Undergraduate Curriculum, which reviews these lists and forwards them to the Provost with recommendations.
The Committee on Examinations and Standing rarely waives distribution requirements, and considers it the duty of the student to check the General Announcements to ascertain that the courses will fulfill distribution requirements.
SPECIAL WARNING: If a faculty member comments that a course "ought to be a distribution course," "contains the right breadth and subject matter for a distribution course," or "is similar to a distribution course," do not simply accept that the course will fulfill distribution requirements.
Check the General Announcements yourself to see if an asterisk is shown by the course title. Each course that counts for distribution is marked with an asterisk. A faculty member is not empowered to determine whether a course counts for distribution. He or she cannot authorize you to substitute a nondistribution course for a distribution course. You are held accountable for checking the status of the courses you take.
