Academic Advising: Year in Review

Academic Advising_largeThe Office of Academic Advising (OAA) just completed another successful academic year of executing our mission statement, which is “to provide an unparalleled environment for students to explore opportunities, identify goals and implement plans to reach those goals.”

Given the past year’s furious pace, we would like to pause and reflect briefly on some of our accomplishments before forging ahead in preparation for next year.

At the top of the list, we built on our strong tradition of faculty advising in the residential colleges by developing even better connections with faculty masters and divisional advisers through regular lunch meetings and improved electronic communication. Both enabled us to improve communication with students at strategic times when we know students need assistance.

Complementing our faculty advising, we are also extremely pleased with the efforts of our Peer Academic Advisers (PAAs). Among their many accomplishments, they successfully hosted fall and spring academic planning sessions to help their peers prepare for the next semester. To maintain the success of this nationally recognized organization, our office competitively selected about 100 new PAAs (from a pool of approximately 300 student applications) for academic year 2014–2015. Enhanced training of the PAAs will also enable their use of best practices in academic advising.

Despite our very successful year and bittersweet goodbye to our graduating seniors, who accomplished so much, we very much look forward to welcoming our new freshmen class during Orientation Week (O-Week) 2014. As usual, O-Week will include a plethora of academic advising events and opportunities necessary to help new students navigate Rice’s curriculum and prepare for their first semester. With help from our entire advising community (faculty, staff and peer academic advisers), we feel confident that next academic year will be at least as successful as this year.

Please keep an eye out for our new website this summer, which we hope will be easier to navigate and offer even more extensive resources to support student success.

Have a great summer!
