A Roadmap for New Students

Foundations for Self-Discovery and Lifelong Learning (UNIV 110) is a new course designed for first-year students as they begin their transition to Rice. The purpose of UNIV 110 is to provide a roadmap for new students, introducing them to various campus resources and networks, to facilitate their success at Rice both inside and outside of the classroom. A two-credit hour course team-taught by an instructor and student peer guide, UNIV 110 will be offered in both the fall and spring semesters. Central to this class is the concept of discovery, which is used to support new students’ examination of the following big picture questions:

  • Who am I in this new environment and who do I want to be?
  • How do I define academic and personal success in college?
  • What are my personal values and are my choices a reflection of those ideals?
  • How can I be intentional in shaping my own college experiences?

These questions are explored through five core topical areas: Well-being in College, Managing Interpersonal Relationships, Identity Development, Academic Exploration and Career Development and Leadership Development, which serve as the course’s content anchors. Additional questions about the course and its curriculum can be directed to Shelah Crear, director of first-year programs, at screar@rice.edu.
