O-Week Welcomes Class of 2016

Although Rice University’s Class of 2016 came together as strangers from all 50 states and across the globe, there was an overwhelming feeling of home and family as the freshmen moved to campus Aug. 12.

And those warm feelings didn’t subside as the week progressed. From the Class of 2016's official welcome into the Rice community at matriculation and the President’s Barbecue to the community outreach activities and the Welcome Back Festival and Concert that closed the week, students were “already starting to feel at home,” John Hutchison, dean of undergraduates, said. “Everything ran like clockwork, and instead of feeling stressed out, everyone was excited.”

Speaking to the Class of 2016 at matriculation, Rice President David Leebron said, “As we celebrate our centennial, you will play an important role in defining not merely who we are as a university, but who we will become. You will be changed by your experience here, but we also expect that Rice will be changed by your presence.”
