Academic Advising for Athletics

The primary goal of the Academic Advising for Athletics office is to ensure each student-athlete receives the help he or she needs to be successful in Rice University’s challenging academic environment. In order to guarantee success, our academic advisors meet individually with student-athletes on a weekly basis to construct plans for academic achievement and monitor progress. Advisors assist student-athletes with everything from scheduling classes and selecting a major to preparing for post-graduate scholastic, athletic and career opportunities.

Among many other resources, the Academic Advising for Athletics staff offers tutoring, supervised study sessions, and help determining the availability of courses to avoid conflict with practices and competition schedules. Our staff is available five days a week inside the Bixby Center located in the Youngkin Center of the Tudor Field House. Built in 2009, the Bixby Center houses offices for advising, compliance and student development as well as boasts computer access, study resources, and group or individual study space for student-athletes.

Academic Awards and Achievements

Rice University student-athletes are honored for their achievements inside the classroom with national, conference and institutional awards every academic year. Student-athletes on each intercollegiate team with the highest GPA are honored with the Rice Scholar Athlete Award. From those honored, the male and female athletes with the highest GPA are recognized as Athletes of the Year and receive the Hubert E. Bray and Margie Sass Awards. Hundreds of our student-athletes also receive conference and national honors each year.

Each year Rice has been a member of Conference USA, the Owls have captured the conference's Institutional Excellence Award. The Institutional Excellence Award is given to the C-USA institution with the highest grade point average during the current academic year for all student-athletes in conference sponsored sports.
